Outdoor kitchen – is it a feasible project?

February 24, 2017 Garden Ideas

If you are lucky enough to live in a home with plenty of garden space and planting trees and flowers isn’t one of your greatest endeavours, then you’re probably wondering how you can give a new purpose to this space. There are plenty of beautiful options to choose from and exterior design magazines definitely encourage homeowners to think outside the box. One of the most interesting ideas is to set up an outdoor kitchen in your garden. Although it’s not one of the most common exhibits displayed at kitchen showrooms in Rotherham, people are definitely intrigued by the idea. If your existing indoor kitchen isn’t too big, expanding it in the garden is a great way of enjoying more space and creating a relaxing environment. The idea sounds amazing, but how feasible is the project?

Outdoor kitchen is it a feasible project

It all depends on the weather

The first thing you should keep in mind before starting an outdoor kitchen project is that your success will be determined by local climate. If you live in a region with extreme weather, then building an outdoor kitchen is simply not worth it, because you won’t be able to make the most out of your investment. Building a roof will provide some protection from rain, snow and extreme heat, but your appliances and furniture will still be affected.

You’ll have to buy special outdoor furniture

Building an outdoors kitchen is totally different in terms of furniture requirements. If for an indoor kitchen you can buy an average set of table and chairs and expect it to last for a good couple of years, an outdoors kitchen requires higher quality pieces. Outdoor furniture is exposed to the elements, so it needs to be sturdier, otherwise it will get damaged or lose its aesthetic appeal in a matter of months. As for cabinets, you’ll need to paint them with a protective waterproof layer.

Flooring matters

Homeowners don’t put too much thought into picking flooring materials for an indoor kitchen. Usually, an average ceramic tile will do. However, outdoor flooring is harder to choose. Apart from the obvious aesthetic consideration, you’ll have to remember that flooring needs to be durable. Hardwood is not recommended, because it can swell due to the humidity. Tiles and marble aren’t that great either, because they can become slippery. Ideally, you should make a stone floor, because it’s very resistant and has an interesting look as well.
